When Dennis Snyder and Steven Rowe founded Snyder & Associates, Inc. in 1977, their vision was for the firm to become known and respected throughout Iowa as a provider of comprehensive engineering services. In order to reach that goal, a strong emphasis was placed on responsive, personal service. Nearly three months after opening the doors of their first office, Dennis and Steve began serving their first client community, Polk City.
Forty years later, we remain true to our founding vision while striving to improve the quality of life for the communities we serve.
“The relationships we’ve formed with our client communities are a driving force behind our work,” shares Dave Moeller, President, of Snyder & Associates. “When they’re successful, we’re successful.”
Polk City, a client to this day, is one of 180 communities Snyder & Associates has served. With an unwavering commitment to owner success, over 90 percent of business comes from repeat clients.
“We share the same goal as our clients and that’s to solve the problems they face with a long-term solution. In doing so, we’re able to establish trust and camaraderie, which are essential to longevity in a client relationship,” adds Moeller.
From City Administrators to public works staff, contractors, community residents, local, state and federal regulators, there are numerous stakeholders involved with every project. The process of collaborating with a diverse group of individuals to reach a shared goal serves as a powerful source of inspiration for Snyder & Associates’ employees.
“I enjoy the way our clients bring us into the fold of their communities and allow us to collaborate in ways that make the lives of the people we serve better,” shares Matt Mahler, Project Engineer. “Working with enthusiastic members of a community is infectious, and you can’t help but feel a great sense of civic responsibility and pride.”
For our diverse team of skilled professionals, the vast array of challenging projects that arise from collaborating with clients has a significant impact on their personal and professional growth. As a result, they’re able to overcome obstacles while acquiring new skills, knowledge, and insight that is crucial in the professional service industry.
“Our goal is to serve as a trusted resource for our clients,” shares Jeff Walters, Environmental Scientist. “We welcome the opportunity to take on a wide variety of projects for our clients, as this allows us to gain valuable knowledge only realized through project experience.”
As he reflects on the First Avenue Grade Separation project, Andy Burke, Civil Engineer, points out how challenging projects often reinforce concepts that are essential to project success.
“Transparency and teamwork throughout a project are important,” he explains. “When challenges arise, it not only impacts stakeholders but the general public as well. A key component of a successful project is keeping everyone involved, aware of what’s going on, and informed on why specific decisions were made.”
From design through construction, there’s a great deal of time and effort that goes into every project. For Burke and Walters, as well as their colleagues, the process of working a project through to completion instills a sense of fulfillment.
“It’s very rewarding when you’re able to provide clients with solutions that bring their vision to fruition,” states Walters.

When reflecting on the overall success and growth of the firm, Moeller credits two sources.
“It really comes down to our clients and our employees,” he acknowledged. “As a result of the challenging projects our clients pose, our employees are compelled to discover innovative solutions.”
