“If I Were Mayor” Essay Contest Open to Iowa 7th Graders

College Scholarships for Iowa 7th Graders

The Iowa League of Cities is now accepting submissions for the eighth annual “If I were Mayor” Essay Contest sponsored by Snyder & Associates. Promotion of positive city government is important to the Iowa League of Cities. The contest is an opportunity for students to articulate their views on the role of mayor and the impact it has in their community.

Snyder & Associates has sponsored the contest since 2015 and is proud to do so once again.

“Getting our youth involved and encouraging them to reflect on the significance of city officials is important. They are our future leaders,” states Dave Moeller, President, of Snyder & Associates. “We enjoy sponsoring this contest as an opportunity to support city government and show the importance we place on future leaders to ensure the growth of our communities.”

A winning essay will be selected in each of the state’s four congressional districts.

Each district winner receives a $250 college scholarship, with one grand prize winner selected to represent the state of Iowa receiving a $500 college scholarship. All winners, along with their parents and teachers, will be recognized in early 2017 during a special ceremony in Des Moines.

The contest is open to all Iowa students currently enrolled in 7th grade. Entries must begin with “If I were mayor, I would…” and are not to exceed 250 words. Essays are judged based on creativity, clarity, sincerity of thought, and proper use of grammar.

All submissions are due December 1, 2017, and winners will be notified by the end of the month. Additional information and a complete list of contest rules are available online through the Iowa League of Cities.
