| MAY 2010 - Award - NW Commercial - Altoona, IA |
The American Council of Engineering Companies of Iowa (ACEC) has awarded a 2010 Engineering Excellence Award to Snyder & Associates, Inc. of Ankeny, Iowa and the City of Altoona for the design and development of the NW Commercial Area Improvements in Altoona, Iowa. The project provided the City with new public improvements necessary to accommodate over 200 acres of commercial/retail development in the Northwest corner of the city.

In spite of several challenges the improvements position the City of Altoona for major economic development and job creation. Throughout the project Snyder & Associates and the City of Altoona worked together with the developers from Heart of America and Bass Pro Shops to ensure their needs were met and the improvements were completed in time for the grand opening of Bass Pro Shops. This project was unique in that it required the development of a detailed storm water plan which included 8 different ponds acting together to minimize storm water discharge from the site. In addition, the project included innovative approaches to handle the heavy traffic movements once the project area is fully developed. Hubbell Avenue received an updated traffic signal at one intersection and a large, but streamlined signal single span truss at another. As patrons enter the development from the south, a hybrid roundabout intersection will point the drivers in the correct location. The design for this $10 million project was completed in approximately 3 months.
The project was selected for the award following a competition among several Iowa engineering consulting firms within the special projects category. ACEC selected the Snyder & Associates, Inc. project based on its originality, innovation, technical value, its consideration for social and economic issues as they relate to the City of Altoona, complexity, and how the project ultimately met the needs of the client.

In selecting Snyder & Associates, Inc. for this Engineering Excellence Award, ACEC cited several aspects of the project as examples of engineering excellence, but highlighted in particular its many solutions to a myriad of complex issues, and the ultimate delivery of a project completion on time and under budget being the project’s great successes. |
| MAY 2010 - Award - Ribbon Cutting - Civic Plaza |
The Civic Plaza is an 11 acre park that is on the eastern edge of an important public open space that links this plaza to the Campus facilities on the west and the library, aquatic center, and skate park with a regional trail system.

In 2006, we began the initial planning for the area with the 8th Street Corridor Master Plan that evolved the idea of developing this area into a community wide plaza park in part because of the centralized location, connection of residence and business, and pedestrian links throughout the community. Snyder and Associates was commissioned to complete the master plan to study the idea more in depth to determine the feasibility of a civic park in Altoona. From these initial concepts, we developed the Civic Plaza Master Plan that realized the possibility of accommodating large scale community events such as farmers markets, art fairs, local music and entertainment, etc. The master plan has guided us through the process of Phase 1 construction recently completed with Larson and Larson contractors.
With these opportunities, the Civic Plaza design developed to include an entry water fountain, splash grounds, specialty pavements, such as the Faux river, which is permeable pavers that handle the rain water, waterfall, wetlands, boardwalk and pond with a fountain. Future improvements quite possible may be a concession/restroom building, performance stage, a gazebo along the water, a sculpture garden, specialty pavement and landscape plantings.

The Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects holds an annual competition acknowledging excellence in landscape architecture by selecting projects of exceptional design quality, positive impact to the public and environment, and advancement of the landscape architecture profession.
The Civic Plaza received the Award of Honor which is the highest design award given to a project in this category in the State of Iowa.
