On Tuesday, January 24, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad and the Iowa League of Cities recognized winners of the 2016 “If I Were Mayor” Essay Contest at the Iowa State Capitol.
Nearly 900 7th grade students from across Iowa submitted essays, each sharing their vision for community improvement if they were mayor. Regional winners from each of Iowa’s four congressional districts were presented with an award and a $250 college scholarship. The overall statewide winner read his essay to Governor Branstad and received an award along with a $500 college scholarship.
