The American Council of Engineering Companies of Iowa (ACEC/Iowa) awarded a 2016 Engineering Excellence Award to the City of West Burlington and contributing team members from our office in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in recognition of their work on the West Burlington Public Works Facility Replacement Project. The award is intended to recognize engineering projects for originality, innovation, and future value to the engineering profession, social, economic and sustainable design considerations, complexity, and meeting and exceeding the needs of the client.
Snyder & Associates would like to thank the City of West Burlington for the opportunity to work together on this project and for support in the nomination of Snyder & Associates and the Public Works Facility Replacement Project for this award.
The project replaced the city’s existing aging public works facility operations which were spread out over several locations within the city, including residential areas. The new facility consists of a 20,000 SF pre-engineered steel building with offices, vehicle hoists and service pits, an overhead crane system, welding and wash bays, and 23 vehicle repair/storage bays. This innovative project incorporated both energy and operation efficient design through stepped daylighting controls, occupancy sensors, in-floor radiant heating, and carbon monoxide sensor control of ventilation.
By having this project constructed, the City of West Burlington’s leadership has shown great foresight to provide its citizens with a public works facility capable of providing a sustainable, safe, and cost-effective working environment for public works employees.
