Inspiring Iowa's Future Leaders Through the "If I Were Mayor" Essay Contest

Every community benefits from fresh ideas, new perspectives, and engaged citizens. The annual “If I Were Mayor” Essay Contest encourages Iowa’s seventh-grade students to think critically about the places they call home and imagine how they would lead their communities if given the opportunity.

Sponsored by Snyder & Associates in partnership with the Iowa League of Cities, the contest gives students a platform to explore local government, civic responsibility, and community improvement while developing their writing skills.

Encouraging Civil Engagement Among Iowa Students

Each fall, the Iowa League of Cities invites seventh-grade English and Social Studies teachers across the state to participate in the contest. Local mayors are also encouraged to connect with schools and help promote the opportunity within their communities.

By asking students to consider the challenges and opportunities facing their cities, the contest helps them better understand the role of local government and the impact civic leaders have on everyday life.

Scholarship Opportunities for Iowa Seventh Graders

Since becoming the contest sponsor in 2015, Snyder & Associates has proudly supported this initiative as part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening Iowa communities.

“As municipal engineers, we work closely with city leaders every day and see firsthand how their decisions shape vibrant, livable communities,” says Dave Moeller, P.E., President of Snyder & Associates. “Encouraging students to think about leadership, community needs, and public service helps inspire the next generation of civic-minded leaders.”

One winning essay is selected from each of Iowa’s four congressional districts. Each district winner receives a $250 college scholarship, while the statewide grand prize winner receives a $500 college scholarship.

The 2026 winners William Bauer (District 1), Suefia Tabei (District 2), Cecilia Kjos (District 3), and Veronica Guerra (District 4), were recognized alongside their parents and teachers during a special ceremony at the Iowa State Capitol, celebrating their creativity and vision for Iowa’s future.
