Watershed Management Success

Approximately 400 attendees are expected for the 11th Annual Iowa Water Conference March 22 and 23, 2017 at the Scheman Building at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Focusing on water resource management from a watershed perspective and the vital role partnerships play in the achievement of goals, “Watershed Management: Partnerships for Progress” is the theme for this year’s conference.

Exploring Squaw Creek Partnership Success

Among those presenting are Steve Klocke, P.E., and Ivo Lopez, Ph.D., P.E., both of Snyder & Associates along with Tracy Warner, P.E., from the City of Ames. Their presentation, “Triple Benefits of a Flood Mitigation Project: Water Main Protection, Low-Head Dam Mitigation, and Streambank Stabilization,” will take place March 23 beginning at 10 a.m.

“Extreme flooding in 2010 had a severe impact on Squaw Creek channel stability, placing critical water supply infrastructure at risk,” explains Klocke. “Ames leveraged FEMA flood hazard mitigation funding to protect Squaw Creek water main infrastructure and mitigate low-head dam impact, improving safety and stream connectivity.”

The Squaw Creek project site is located just a few blocks from the Iowa Water Conference location, providing attendees with a convenient opportunity to view it firsthand. Partnerships between the City of Ames, Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management, FEMA, Iowa State University, the USGS, DNR, USACE, and Snyder & Associates drove project success.

Project Challenges and Accomplishments

During the presentation, site constraint challenges will be summarized along with the process used to implement a sustainable solution that enhances environmental conditions. Noted aspects of the project include:

  • Stabilizing a 25-foot tall bank
  • Shaping low floodplain benches with rock toe protection
  • Establishing rapids/riffles
  • Modifying the existing weir/dam
  • Integrating native vegetation
