Site Design & Sustainability Drive Sun Prairie Library Expansion

Snyder & Associates played a central role in the planning and site design for the Sun Prairie Public Library Expansion and Renovation Project. This $26 million investment will nearly double the facility’s size to meet the needs of one of Wisconsin’s fastest-growing communities. In collaboration with the City of Sun Prairie, the Library Board, and FEH Design, our team developed a site plan that complements the library’s architecture, enhances connections to nearby public spaces, and supports the community’s long-term growth.

Designing a Connected, Sustainable Site

Located beside Sheehan Park and the Sun Prairie Community Gardens, the expanded library site creates a seamless link between indoor and outdoor learning environments. The Snyder & Associates civil engineering and landscape architecture teams designed sidewalks and trails that connect the library to the surrounding park system, providing safe and accessible routes for all visitors. The site also features outdoor classroom areas and amphitheater-style seating for performances and community gatherings, promoting creativity and engagement.

Sustainability guided every design decision. Working with the electrical and plumbing consultants, our engineers integrated geothermal wells and planned for future solar panel installations to reduce the library’s environmental footprint. These improvements align with the City’s sustainability goals and the library’s commitment to energy efficiency and stewardship.

Efficient Grading & Thoughtful Detailing

One of the project’s key challenges involved managing a surplus of fill material. Snyder & Associates developed a grading plan that balanced earthwork needs and minimized soil removal. Grading berms were strategically placed to buffer the site from traffic along Linnerud Drive, improving aesthetics and reducing noise for patrons enjoying the new outdoor spaces.

The landscape plan emphasized preservation and enhancement of natural features. Our team worked with City Forestry staff to relocate donor trees and restore native prairie vegetation that complements the surrounding landscape. These efforts will create an inviting and ecologically balanced setting that encourages outdoor exploration.

A Welcoming, Future-Ready Destination

Completed in early 2026, the expanded Sun Prairie Public Library features a terrazzo-floored atrium, enlarged bookstore and café, outdoor amphitheater, dedicated caregiving and sensory rooms, and recording studios for local creators. Renewable energy systems, including geothermal and solar, further the City’s sustainability objectives.

Library leaders describe the amphitheater as a one-of-a-kind regional feature, offering space for performances, outdoor readings, and educational events. The new interior and exterior improvements have enhanced the library’s status as a true community destination where learning, culture, and connection thrive.

From initial planning through construction administration, Snyder & Associates is proud to have helped deliver a project that reflects Sun Prairie’s dedication to education, sustainability, and community growth. The new library campus serves as a welcoming, accessible space for generations to come.
