K-12/Higher Education Facilities Site Development

Engineering for Education Facilities Site Development

Today’s educators face a multitude of obstacles along the path for successfully enabling students to thrive academically. The twenty-first-century learning environment encompasses collaboration and community, innovation and creativity, safety and sustainability. With decades of experience performing civil engineering duties for K-12 and collegiate level institutions, Snyder & Associates recognizes the complexities and realities of this world. We’ve partnered with public stakeholders, owners, architects, and contractors to provide the technical expertise required to expand and renovate existing facilities and build new schools or campus amenities.

The Snyder & Associates team understands the planning, design, and construction nuances of a modern learning and campus experience. From the initial feasibility study through final occupancy, our team provides surveying, engineering design, and construction management services, to name a few. Our extensive experience gives us insight into how the small details — the safety of vehicle and bus lanes, adequate accommodations for bicycle and pedestrian traffic, and the incorporation of outdoor learning spaces — make a difference in the quality of education. With an in-house team of landscape and outdoor design professionals, we’re also equipped to create the modern sports facilities that often accompany school renovations and construction.

The physical learning environment plays an essential role in the success of students, teachers, and administrators, alike. Creating the ideal environment that supports growth and learning requires an in-depth familiarity with the ever-changing topics of environmental sustainability, safety, and technology, not to mention the requirements of individual state education agencies. The Snyder & Associates professionals stand ready to help guide your next project by offering our fresh perspective and diligent planning expertise.

Construction Begins on the New Ames High School Project

When the current Ames High School opened in the early 1960s, the City of Ames had a population of 27,000. That number is on pace to surpass 67,000 over the next few years. And although the high school building has undergone over 15 additions and improvement projects in the intervening decades, the current facility is no longer able to meet the needs of the ever-growing student population. In 2019, officials from the Ames Community School District held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new $137 million high school. The project will be almost entirely funded by a bond referendum passed by the community the previous year. Working in conjunction with OPN Architects, Snyder & Associates is playing a major role in providing civil engineering services for the new facility.

New High School Building & Stadium Complex Design for Johnston Community

Johnston is a rapidly growing community located just north of Des Moines. Between 2000 and 2013, the city’s school district grew by over 2,400 students, prompting the need for a new high school and stadium complex. Both the high school and athletic complex are among largest facilities of their kind in the state of Iowa. Serving as the civil engineer and landscape architect for the project, Snyder & Associates provided expertise in pavement design, stormwater management, utility design, and landscape design. Collaborating with the Johnston Community School District, we worked to provide safe vehicle and pedestrian circulation, along with traffic considerations for normal school days and large athletic events.

Athletic Field Improvements & Expanded Facilities for McFarland School District

Nestled along the east bank of Lake Waubesa just south of Madison, the Village of McFarland has experienced steady population growth over the past several decades. This influx of new residents found the local school district slowly outgrowing their current facilities. With the last major renovations at the high school having occurred more than twenty years ago, the district began moving forward with renovations and additions across all four of their facilities. Working in conjunction with Plunkett Raysich Architects, the Snyder & Associates engineering and planning team provided invaluable site development services for this multi-year project, as well as providing extensive sports field design plans.
