From Des Moines to Carlisle on the Karras-Kaul Connector Trail

2025 Iowa's "Best" Recreational Trails PCC Paving Project awarded by Iowa Concrete Paving Association (ICPA) Central Iowa’s trail network is expanding with the Carlisle Multi-Use Trail Connection, now known as the Karras-Kaul Connector Trail. Spearheaded by Des Moines city leaders, this 3.2-mile trail segment was developed in collaboration with the engineering team at Snyder & Associates to bridge a critical gap between the Polk and Warren County trail systems. By connecting the Easter Lake Spine Trail in Des Moines to the City of Carlisle and the Summerset Trail, this project enables seamless travel for pedestrians and cyclists across central Iowa’s scenic landscapes, establishing a new recreational corridor for residents and visitors alike.

An Essential Link Connecting Trails & Communities

The Karras-Kaul Connector Trail serves as a vital component in central Iowa’s trail network, linking the Easter Lake Spine Trail to trail networks in Warren County, including the Summerset Trail. Starting at the Easter Spine Trail crossing on East Army Post Road, the project transforms an at-grade crossing into a safe, grade-separated one through the installation of a new 12’x9’ Reinforced Concrete Box Culvert (RCBC) pedestrian tunnel. From there, the trail moves southward through the picturesque fields of southeast Des Moines, crossing East Pine Avenue and SE 36th Street, then following SE 38th Street along the shoulder. After passing under the Highway 5 bridge to enter Warren County, the trail continues along E County Line Road, where it connects to the City of Carlisle trail system at 150th Avenue. With this connection, the trail provides uninterrupted travel across an 85.4-mile route stretching from Jefferson in Greene County to Indianola, creating a continuous pathway for outdoor enthusiasts.

Expert Coordination & Environmental Care

Snyder & Associates brought its multidisciplinary expertise to this transformative project, offering project administration, civil and structural engineering, topographic surveying, environmental studies, and public engagement for right-of-way (ROW) acquisition. Successful public outreach efforts involved collaboration with five property owners to secure the necessary ROW for the trail’s alignment, demonstrating a commitment to community involvement and transparency. Beyond ROW acquisition, the project scope also included bat habitat surveys, regenerative stream improvements, and extensive utility coordination, including with the Oneok Pipeline. Through Snyder & Associates’ meticulous planning and execution, the team delivered a trail design that prioritizes user safety, sustainability, and habitat preservation.

Creating Uninterrupted Recreational Pathways

The completion of the Karras-Kaul Connector Trail will integrate with Iowa’s vast trail network, allowing for continuous travel through various landscapes and local landmarks. Cyclists, hikers, and walkers will experience a scenic, connected pathway without leaving designated trails. This new link not only expands recreational access but also strengthens community connections, promotes active lifestyles, and encourages appreciation for Iowa’s natural beauty.

Building a Legacy of Connectivity & Community Engagement

The Karras-Kaul Connector Trail is a testament to the transformative impact of infrastructure projects that prioritize connectivity and accessibility. Through the dedication of Des Moines city officials and Snyder & Associates, this trail project highlights the power of community-driven development and environmental stewardship. As the trail opens, it will offer countless opportunities for exploration and engagement, linking communities and celebrating Iowa’s rich landscape and heritage.
